Zuikerbosch Pumping Station Engine Room 1 Embankment Stabilisation

Project Description

The existing earth embankment on the Vaal River along Engine Room 1 at Zuikerbosch Pumping Station was gradually “slipping” towards the river. A comprehensive geotechnical investigation was undertaken to determine the cause of failure and to propose remedial measures. Contiguous piling was carried out to prevent further failure. Other measures were also taken to mitigate against river action and surface water runoff contributing to the destabilization of the embankment. These included installation of gabion baskets and the planting of vetiver grass. Eradication of alien vegetation also formed part of the contract scope. The project was completed well within time and budget.
